Please scroll down the page for many tips on caring for your new bully baby and things to have on hand before they arrive in their new home.
The big day has finally arrived!!!!!!!
You are bringing home your new bully baby. Here are some tips that should make this an easy transition. I am not a procrastinator. I am a firm believer in being prepared. Of course there will always be last minute things needed but a well prepared 'new parent' is a much calmer one. Your new bully baby needs as much calm as possible until he or she has had time to settle in.

This is pretty much a step by step guide on how to bring your new english bulldog puppy into your household and make him or her feel welcome and comfortable. Bringing a new english bulldog puppy into your home is an exciting time for you and your family, but the puppy may be a little confused by all the changes in his or her life.

You need to provide your english bulldog puppy with a suitable bed. A crate is also suggested . This will make it much easier on you. Make sure to buy a large enough crate so he/she will have room for growth. It is a good idea to cover at least half the crate with a blanket so he/she has a more secure feeling. Don't spend too much for a bed at this time because in all likelihood, it will get chewed. :) I typically use an old blanket.
The bed & crate should be somewhere that is relatively quiet so that he/she can sleep undisturbed whenever he/she is tired. Many people find a quiet corner of the kitchen or family room. This is ideal.

Your english bulldog puppy needs his/her own food and water bowls. They should be stainless steel with straight edges. Curved edges make it difficult for a short nosed breed to get all the food out. Always use stainless steel bowls. Plastic bowls can harbor bacteria.

Make sure to have a supply of food on hand that your english bulldog puppy breeder has been feeding. If you want to change brands, it needs to be done gradually as to not upset the stomach. I will discuss all this with you when you pick up your puppy or I will email you my information pack with instructions on doing this.

All puppies like to chew. This is normal behavior and it helps with the teething process. Give your english bulldog puppy toys to chew on to deter him/her from selecting your favorite shoes or your grandmothers antique table. Toys do not need to be elaborate but need to be non-toxic and large enough that they cannot be swallowed. Choose relatively indestructible toys as english bulldog puppies can do serious damage to many different kinds of products. DO NOT GIVE RAWHIDES OR CHEWIES TO YOUR PUPPY OR ADULT ENGLISH BULLDOG. They become very soft and slimy and can be easily swallowed resulting in them becoming lodged in your english bulldogs throat and cutting off air flow. This is very dangerous. I cannot stress enough that rawhides are a definite no-no. They can kill your beloved bulldog puppy or adult english bulldog.

Although it isn't advised to walk your english bulldog puppy until he/she has completed vaccinations, you will still need to have a suitable harness and leash for him/her. The harness should be soft and well fitting. I DO NOT USE COLLARS ON ENGLISH BULLDOGS. For the first few days, he/she should only wear the harness for short periods and only while you are there to supervise. Wearing the harness around the house for short periods of time for several days will get him/her used to it and result in less 'opposition' when you go for that first walk.
PLEASE do not use a choke chain on your english bulldog puppy or adult bulldog. It can easily be used incorrectly and could cause irreparable damage to his/her neck. I ALWAYS recommend harnesses for an english bulldog because collars of any kind, pulled on or just simply put on too tight can interrupt the air flow.

I recommend brushing two to three times a week to cut down on shedding. Regular grooming can reduce shedding tremendously. I am also a huge fan of the 'FURMINATOR'. I would do a commercial for this product! Most pet supply stores ie: PetSmart, carry them. Do not buy a generic product. Only buy the furminator.

Your english bulldog puppy's nails will require regular trimming. Start handling your bulldog puppy's feet from the time you bring him/her home. Make it part of your 'petting' time. This will help make him/her a more well behaved dog during nail trimming time.

MAKE SURE you are 100% comfortable with your veterinarian. Bulldogs need special care and it is of the utmost importance that your vet be english bulldog 'savvy'.

While your english bulldog is small, keep everything that could be dangerous to him/her out of reach. He/she may tug or chew anything within reach, including plants and electrical cords. Do your research on poisonous plants and take care to keep them away from your puppy.

Check your yard to see that fencing is in good repair and secure. Make sure there are no small holes that he/she could squeeze through. Make sure your gate shuts securely. POOLS AND PONDS SHOULD BE FENCED OFF SO YOUR BULLDOG HAS NO ACCESS TO THEM!! English bulldogs and water do not mix. This is addressed later on.
Never leave your bulldog unattended outside. Things can happen quickly; in the blink of an eye.
English bulldogs are a very popular breed so they are stolen frequently. They have been stolen from individuals fenced yards. I can not stress to you enough that you need to keep your eye on him/her at all times.

WHEN YOUR BULLDOG PUPPY ARRIVES:

Once home, let him/her sniff around and make himself/herself familiar with the new surroundings. Then introduce him/her to their new bed.

Introducing the puppy into your household must be done with care. This is a confusing time for your new baby. Your home is a profusion of strange sights, sounds, and smells that he/she may find exciting but a little overwhelming. He/she will be missing his mother, & brothers and sisters.  He/she will look to you and your family to replace the company, comfort and security of the only home he/she has known. This is where a nice, big ole' rocking chair or over-stuffed chair is needed. Sit with your bulldog puppy and cuddle, comfort and love. This is the ultimate time for your bonding with one another.

Choose a name for your english bulldog puppy as soon as possible. Be consistent; use it repeatedly as you talk to him/her. He/she will soon respond. Bulldogs are VERY smart.

Young children in your family should be taught that puppies are not toys. You will find that your bulldog puppy plays vigorously for short spells and then may retire to his/her bed for an hour or so. Sleep is as important for your puppy as it is for a human baby, so please do not disturb him/her while he/she is resting.

Don't deprive established pets of your attention or they may become jealous of the new arrival. Introduction should be made gradually, on neutral territory and under constant supervision. Never leave a puppy alone with an older cat or dog. Feed them separately until they have become friends. In my experience with english bulldogs, friendship will happen quickly. Afterall.....what's not to love!!??!!

For the first few nights, your puppy may be restless and may whimper when left alone. Wrapping a water bottle filled with warm water in a blanket and placing it in his/her bed can be very reassuring for your fur baby. Do not use rubber or plastic water bottles. The puppy may chew them.
If all else fails......do what I always do. Put them in bed with me!!!

Above all, be kind, gentle and patient with your new english bulldog puppy. Don't scold or speak harshly to him/her, especially in the first few days....even if he/she is destructive or has a potty accident. During this introduction and his/her confused state, he/she may learn to fear you. This initiation period should be an enjoyable time in which you and your new english bulldog puppy can get to know one another and he/she learns to trust you, thus forming the basis for a happy life together.

Your new english bulldog puppy must receive the correct diet to give him/her the best possible start in life. Any mistakes at this stage of his/her life can have serious and long lasting effects. His/her diet must provide all the nutrients he/she needs for healthy growth and development~not only in the correct amounts but also in the correct proportions to each other.
I will give you feeding instructions when you pick up your puppy. I will also give you a starter bag of his/her current food.

Both you and your english bulldog puppy will be happier if he/she is well trained. His/her natural instinct is to submit to the discipline imposed by his/her pack leader...this is your role. Through training, he/she will learn to understand what is required of him/her and how to please you. Take time with this and you will find the companionship of an obedient dog more than repays your efforts. English bulldogs are VERY stubborn. You must let him/her know you are the pack leader from the beginning. Bulldogs are only what you make them to be. They can easily become a big couch potato or a monster. NEVER ROUGH HOUSE WITH A BULLDOG PUPPY. This will cause unhappiness for you and in return for your dog.
I HIGHLY recommend at least basic obedience training. Check around for classes in your area. You can easily do this on your own but you must have patience and be consistent.

House training is easily accomplished through crate training. I will address this with you when you get your puppy.

DANGER! DANGER! DANGER!

English bulldogs are of the brachycephalic (brachy meaning short and cephalic meaning head) breed. DO YOUR RESEARCH!
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER EVER leave your english bulldog outside for long periods of time. They can become overheated and WILL HAVE A HEAT STROKE AND DIE. They do not do well in very cold weather either. Bulldogs are inside dogs. We will address many issues on this when you pick up your puppy but always remember, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take great caution when your bulldog is outside.
If I am to ship your puppy to you, I will either email you the info packet or send it along with your puppy.

Bulldogs LOVE water but water does not love bulldogs. They CANNOT swim and WILL DROWN. Please take great caution if you live near a lake or pond or even a deep creek or river. If you have a pool, please keep the gate closed at all unsupervised times. From my personal experience, they seem drawn to water for some reason. A bulldog will jump in deep water and not think twice about it. I guarantee that. They are so heavy boned, they sink. I highly recommend purchasing a life vet for your bulldog if you are going to have him/her around water.
Keeping a child's wading pool around for them is a good idea. They love it!!

Be a responsible dog owner.
Like all worthwhile things in life, owning a dog involves responsibilities as well as pleasures. The pleasures are obvious, and the responsibilities, not just to the dog but also to other people and the environment, need to be considered.

I hope this has been informative and interesting reading for you. If you still feel that an english bulldog is the breed for you and your family, I hope I can prove to be the reputable, ethical, caring english bulldog breeder that you have been searching for.
